AGE:
Harvey Weinstein is 70 years old.
DETAIL OF INCIDENCE:
Disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein, already serving over two decades in prison for a rape conviction in New York, will face new sex crimes charges in Los Angeles in a trial that could last several weeks.
Jury selection begins Monday in the sprawling case that will further exacerbate the downfall of Weinstein, the once-powerful Hollywood producer. The new trial is also likely to spotlight the #MeToo movement, which spurred a reckoning over sexual assault in the movie industry and across many workplaces and institutions.
Prosecutors in Los Angeles County laid out the scope of charges against Weinstein in an 11-count indictment that accuses him of sexually assaulting five women in separate incidents that spanned nearly a decade, from 2004 to 2013. The trial will cover four counts of rape and seven counts of sexual assault, and the women will be identified during the proceedings as Jane Does 1 through 5.
Weinstein, 70, has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he faces life in prison in California.
The 70-year-old is serving 23 years in jail in New York after he was convicted of sexual assaults, including rape.
The new charges include allegations of assault and rape that allegedly took place in Los Angeles hotels between 2004 and 2013.
He denies the charges.
Jury selection, which began on Monday, is expected to take about two weeks. Five alleged victims are expected to take the stand during the trial.
The Oscar-winning Shakespeare in Love and Pulp Fiction producer claims his sexual encounters were consensual, and his lawyer told the press the latest round of West Coast allegations “stem from many years ago” and cannot “be substantiated or corroborated by any forensic evidence” or “credible witnesses.”
If convicted, Weinstein could face 140 additional years behind bars.
His conviction in New York in 2020 was a landmark moment for the #MeToo movement, which had been calling out widespread sexual abuse and harassment in the film industry for several years.
In Los Angeles, prosecutors initially charged him in early 2020 but opted to put the trial on hold until legal proceedings in New York had been completed.
Stars including Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Salma Hayek accused Weinstein of assault or harassment.
In a statement quoted by the Los Angeles Times, one of Weinstein’s defence attorneys, Mark Werksman, said that some women who are expected to testify would be familiar to the public.
According to the Times, witnesses at the trial will be identified either as Jane Doe or by their first name and initials.
The New York Film Festival will premiere. She Said This, a movie about the 2017 newspaper investigation into Weinstein, this week.
In June, it was revealed he was also to be charged with two counts of indecent assault against a woman in London in the summer of 1996.
