“Then she jumped out herself. She told me she was pregnant and I rushed to get her some water and sit her down.”Hayden added: “When we were in the shop, there was nothing to see. Everything was normal.“Within about three minutes, you could see flames and there was no way for the mum and babies to get out. The woman was hanging from her window screaming for help.“I tried to get closer, but the flames were already smothering the house.
The witnesses said both children were covered with soot and smoke as they were hauled from the burning building by firefighters. And they say the dad then arrived home to find his children receiving CPR in the street. Demi-Lee said: “He was screaming for his children. “The emotion in his voice was just heartbreaking. It was the most horrific thing I’ve seen.
Hayden and Gordon smashed through a padlocked alley door before scaling onto the kitchen extension. Gordon then booted through a back window in a desperate attempt to reach the little ones. However, the smoke was so thick he and Hayden were driven back, despite three attempts to climb in. Gordon, who suffers from asthma, was later rushed to the hospital with breathing difficulties. Demi-Lee and Hayden waited in the hospital for news until 2 am.”They said the babies are in a critical condition,” Demi-Lee said.
“I’ve got a son myself, the same age as the little girl. I just couldn’t watch them die like that.”It was the most horrific thing I’ve seen.”Builder Gordon told of his distress after he was released from the hospital.” I was up most of the night praying,” he said.”I’ve hardly slept and I’ve struggled today.”I’ve just been praying for the children and asking for them to be ok. I can’t stop thinking about it.”He told of his pride in Hayden, who has just started working with him, as well as the shopkeeper who raced to the scene and scaled the extension roof with him.
“They were just brilliant,” he said.”The smoke was unreal when we got to the back of the house.
“I smashed in the window and pulled back the curtains. I was screaming, ‘Come here, but I don’t know if they could understand or hear me.”Everything was black inside. I was overwhelmed by the smoke. Cops arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He has since been released under investigation.
Detective Chief Inspector Graham Hill said: “Sadly, the two children are still in hospital with life-threatening injuries, and we continue to keep them and their family in our thoughts at this awful time.
“A joint investigation with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service is ongoing and the fire is being treated as unexplained while we establish a cause.
